Students of Federal University Lokoja have vowed not to resume classes until both federal and state governments implement adequate safety measures. Despite the school's indefinite closure, they continue protesting outside the campus.
Ahmed Suleiman, a student spokesman, expressed frustration over recurring accidents that have claimed students' lives, saying, “We have been patient, but another tragedy occurred this week. We can’t tolerate this anymore."
Another protester lamented the loss of innocent students, questioning why seeking education in Lokoja should come at such a cost.
Following ongoing protests, the university management announced an indefinite closure, instructing students to vacate the campus by noon on February 20, 2025.
The protests were triggered by a fatal accident where a heavy-duty truck carrying palm oil and firewood collided with a shuttle bus transporting students.
Students have refused to remove barricades at the school entrance, demanding justice for their deceased colleagues and concrete safety measures before resumption. The Felele expressway, where the accident occurred, is notorious for frequent crashes involving students.
