SEVEN UNILORIN STAFF MEMBERS NAMED AMONG TOP 2% OF SCIENTISTS IN THE WORLD

The scientists, who have reinforced the unimpeachable reputation of the University as a citadel of learning that sits right at the very height of world class academic practice, had their names listed in the latest Elsevier data repository published on September 16, 2024.

The seven scholars include a former Dean of the Faculty of Physical Sciences, Prof. Kayode John Oyewumi of the Department of Physics; the immediate past Dean of Student Affairs, Prof Musa Toyin Yakubu of the Biochemistry Department and a one-time UNILORIN Researcher of the Year, Dr George Adewale Adeniyi of the Department of Chemical Engineering.

Also on the list are Dr Mufutau Opeyemi Bello and Dr Folorunso M. Ajide, both of the Department of Economics; as well as Dr Joseph Bamidele Awotunde of the Department of Computer Science, and Dr Melody Okereke of the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences.

The data repository on which the scholars appear is described as “…a publicly available database of top-cited scientists that provides standardised information on citations, h-index, co-authorship adjusted hm-index, citations to papers in different authorship positions…”

Reacting to the development, the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Wahab Olasupo Egbewole SAN, expressed delight over the favourable rating of the lecturers.

Prof. Egbewole, who spoke through the Director of Corporate Affairs, University of Ilorin, Mr Kunle Akogun, congratulated the scholars, saying that “home and abroad, every member of the University community should contribute to the University’s greatness.

He added that “the latest Elsevier ranking of the University’s scientists as being among the top researchers at the global level has moved the University closer to becoming the topmost Nigerian University, one of the best ten in Africa and among the leading 500 universities at global level”.

The Vice Chancellor enjoined other staff members of the University to emulate the industry and passion for excellence of the seven lecturers for the institution to achieve its desire to be the best.
