The University of Ilorin's Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has granted scholarships totaling N700,000 to four outstanding students.
Among the recipients, Tijani Rukayat and Timothy Moses Tiya each received N200,000 scholarships, while Ofiku Mathew (Optometrics department) and Salawudeen Babatunde (computer science) were awarded N150,000 each.
During the scholarship presentation, ASUU branch chairman, Dr. Alex Akanmu, advocated for the federal government to provide grants instead of loans to ensure that economically disadvantaged students can access education.
Akanmu emphasized the importance of making education affordable through grants rather than soft loans, expressing concerns about the repayment challenges associated with loans. He shared an incident highlighting the financial struggles of a scholarship recipient in securing transportation to the institution.
This scholarship initiative, initiated in 2018, reflects ASUU's ongoing commitment to supporting academically exceptional, economically disadvantaged students in realizing their educational aspirations.
